I
woke up early on this Tuesday morning and went to the bathroom. Da-Quan
overheard me apparently and silently waited outside the bathroom door
to greet me in the morning. He was still sleepy looking, even though
he asked that he wanted to see the screen savers on the computer again.
I told him that it was too early in the morning and so, instead, he
crept into my room and fell asleep on my bed. I lay next to him and
waited until my Uncle Huei found him and told him it was time for
school. I don’t think I could have gone to sleep with him sleeping
next to me since he rolled around a lot.
I went on the Internet and found that Daniel and another
friend were online. I had Daniel check my E-mail since I had trouble
accessing my account. Dad had written that I should call my uncles
to let them know about my arrival. After chatting a while with Daniel,
I started studying a little bit for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
since I was going to take it when I got back to California. For breakfast,
I had pastries, freshly baked, from the RT market we went to yesterday,
which tasted delicious. Then, I went with Aunt May to my grandparent’s
apartment to drop Da-Chien off. They were going to baby-sit him. Funny
enough, Aunt May thought I was a good luck charm of some sort because
she found that finding parking near my grandparent’s apartment
was usually hard, but with me in the car, she always found a spot
close by.
After dropping off the little baby, we went to take
a bus to the subway station. We were going to ride the recently completed
Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). However, we first went to a Starbucks coffee
shop nearby to have a drink. I have to say that Starbucks was ubiquitous
when I last came to Taipei and it certainly is still ubiquitous. Everywhere
I looked, there would be a Starbucks coffee shop.

There are several other coffee shops here that are
not nearly as commonplace (Is Coffee, Barista), but they are everywhere
enough that one wouldn’t have trouble finding one. I ordered
an iced cafe mocha. Unfortunately, after taking my first sip, I
got mocha on my shorts. Wiping off the stains from my shorts, Aunt
May and I then chatted about the GRE, graduate school, and computers
in general.
Before getting onto the subway, Aunt May went and
made a transaction at the bank, that was also nearby. Finally, we
bought tickets for the MRT and were on our way to a district north
of Taiwan called Tam-Sheui. At first we took the wrong subway, and
had to change subways midway through, but we eventually got there.
The subway ride was beautiful, not to mention convenient. It was
also very fast and I could see that it solved a lot of the traffic
problems for people. As it was in Taiwan, it was very hot and humid
in Tam-Sheui.
My aunt and I took a walk along the seashore and we took some pictures.
As we strolled down the strip, my aunt kept raving about the crab
that was cooked there. Apparently, it was the best crab dish ever
made, even though it was quite expensive, costing about 20 US dollars.
However, I told her that I was allergic to some kinds of seafood
and that I would have to be careful with what I ate. We eventually
made our way to a place that literally translated into red fur fort.
It was a base built by the Portuguese to fight the Spanish. It was
beautiful and so we took some pictures. It was also hat, so we made
sure to stand in the shade most of the time. I toured the various
uninhabited buildings. There was a newly married couple taking some
wedding photos as well.
